Pablo Laso and the Israeli Federation have had a meeting whereby the former Real Madrid coach received an official offer to take over the country's national team.
Credit: BNS Credit BNSAlmost eight months have passed since Real Madrid decided to dispense with Pablo Laso's services, citing a heart problem and alleged medical reports that Laso himself has not seen.
Over that period, the phone of the coach from Vitoria has been busy receiving with offers from EuroLeague teams and invitations from NBA franchises to try to get him back on the bench.
The latest has come from the Israeli Federation, whose delegation traveled to Spain a few days ago to meet with the most successful coach in the history of Real Madrid and try to convince him to take over the reins of the team. An option that would also allow him to take charge of a team like Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, with which he has also been linked during these months.
According to sport5.co.il, the chairman of the Israeli Federation Amiram Halevi and the director of the Israeli national basketball teams Pini Gershon met with Laso and made him an official offer to take over.
The two presented to Lasso the goals and expectations for the upcoming campaign and, in general, their vision regarding Israeli basketball and the national team.
During the meeting, Laso reportedly did not rule out the possibility of taking the job and said that his reply will come in the next few days. If he does take on the task, he will be the first foreign coach to stand on the lines in the Israeli national team.
If accepts the Israeli offer, Laso will take charge of a team that is currently without a coach after the resignation of Guy Goodes. His dismissal came after the team's bad streak in the EuroBasket group stage and failure to qualify for next summer's World Cup.
As reported by Walla Sport, Pini Gershon, legendary Maccabi Tel Aviv coach and current manager of the Israeli team, was the first to put the name of Pablo Laso on the table as a candidate to take over the squad's bench and meet the goal of leading it to the Paris Olympic Games.
Since his departure from Real Madrid, the winner of 22 titles in 11 seasons with Real Madrid has always maintained that he is in no rush to return to the bench.
However, it's not the first time that the name of Pablo Laso sounds strongly in Israel. Last December the Israeli press pointed to the coach from Vitoria as a possible substitute for Oded Kattash at the helm of Maccabi in the midst of a results crisis. And despite the fact that the EuroLeague powerhouse seems determined to keep its coach until the end of the season, Laso continues to be a possibility for the future.
