The franchise has also extended the contract with Mazzulla. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
'As he has shown, Joe is a very talented coach and leader," Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said. "He has a unique ability to galvanize a room around a mission. We are thankful for the work he has done to help us get to this point, and excited that he has agreed to lead us into the future."
The previous head coach Ime Udoka was suspended for a year after violating the team's internal policies. As The Athletic found out, Udoka had an intimate relationship with a female staffer.
With 42 wins and 17 losses, the Celtics are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference standings.
