Moreover, Harden spent time encouraging the young man.
"Everything will work itself out, be strong. You're alright. You will be alright, I promise you are," Harden sent a supportive message during a FaceTime call.
"I love when you're smiling too. I am with you. I know it's tough right now, but you have to stay physically strong. You just gotta think positive things and keep pushing and keep fighting. I got you," the 76ers player kept inspiring.
"I got some gifts for you too. I got some things coming your way. Hopefully, [they] give you some encouragement and make you smile a little bit. Let me know if you need anything else."
James Harden told ESPN's Malika Andrews that he wanted to brighten John's day, even if it was just for one minute.
Harden gave his phone number to the 20-year-old survivor and also made sure they will FaceTime again soon. Harden is hopeful that John will be able to come to the Sixers game in the near future.
"It's bigger than basketball," Harden said after Philadelphia's 110-105 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at Wells Fargo Center Thursday night. "This is real life, you know what I mean? This is bigger than basketball.
I'm fortunate just to be in a position where I can make an impact on people's lives. That's what I really care about. That's what I value and what makes me happy, obviously, other than basketball, family, and things like that.
It's a tragedy. He wasn't expecting that. There was nothing he could control. That's the craziest part about it. Anything I can do my part, I'm going to do it."
