The devastating accident occurred on the A7 speedway, between Berkhof and Schwarmstedt (Heidekreis) on Friday evening. According to the police, Salami's Hyundai, which was on its way to Hamburg and at an 80 km distance from the city, collided with a truck that was carrying a heavy load. The exact circumstances are still unclear.
The Hyundai then spun into the left lane and collided with another car. The two vehicles caught fire and burned out completely.
The 28-year-old driver of the oncoming car was able to get out of the car with serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Any help came too late for Salami.
The 26-year-old forward with a height of 1.97 meters kicked off his career in Germany's third division, where he became the absolute top scorer. He even turned down offers from the Bundesliga to remain loyal to his hometown of Hamburg – and to take care of his six siblings.
Salami last played for the Dragons Rhoendorf, a second-division team from the Bonn area. A few days before the accident, the deceased athlete led the Dragons to victory scoring 25 points.
