The two teams have everything to become a big rivalry in the NBA soon. They are expected to compete for the championship this season and things are already tense between them.
Picking things right where they left them off last season, Luka Doncic and Devin Booker went at it during the final seconds of the game.
In the end, the Suns got the last laugh, getting away with a 130-126 win at American Airlines Center. Doncic finished the game with 34 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Booker responded with 36 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant clashed for the first time since their moves away from the Brooklyn Nets, with the former dropping 30 points, to go along with 4 rebounds and 7 assists. KD scored 37 for his team, with 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
The rivalry between Doncic and Booker isn't new, as they clashed a lot during their second-round series in the 2022 NBA playoffs. The Mavericks demolished the Suns to advance to the Western Conference Finals, leaving the Suns without chances to compete for the NBA championship again.
It's unclear what Booker told Doncic that sparked his reaction, but the Slovenian player wasn’t having any of that, and he let Booker know.
After the game, Booker said he was speaking to the referee, not Doncic, before they went nose-to-nose. He said he has no problems was Doncic on or off the court, but in a competitive environment, he's not surprised "there’s some smoke."
"You guys (reporters) say you don't want everybody to be friendly-friendly. There you go. We got some smoke," Booker uttered with a smile.
"It's just two competitors going at it. Like I said, everybody speaks to how friendly the NBA is right now... I have no problem with Luka on or off the court, but when we're competing, we're competing."
On the other hand, Luka Doncic didn't have much to say.
"It’s a competitive game. It’s all good," the Slovenian star said. "Next time, just don’t wait until there are three seconds left to talk."
The Mavericks keep struggling with Luka and Kyrie on the court, while the Suns are 3-0 since Kevin Durant made his debut with the team.
