According to the official announcement, associate head coach Adrian Autry will take over as the new head coach.
The 8th-ranked Syracuse lost against the 9th-seed Wake Forest on Wednesday after Daivien Williamson hit a last-second three-pointer to take the 77-74 victory.
"The university hired me and it's their choice what they want to do. I always have the choice of retirement but it's their decision whether I coach or not, always has been," the veteran coach said during the post-game press conference. "Again, I've been very lucky to coach my college team, to play and then be an assistant coach, a head coach, and never having to leave Syracuse."
Most notably, Boeheim became the national champion in 2003 with a roster led by Carmelo Anthony. The coach is a three-time Olympic gold medalist as an assistant coach with USA national team in 2008, 2012, and 2016. He is also a two-time gold medalist at the FIBA World Cup in 2010 and 2014.
