Villeneuve D'Asq LM player Kennedy Burke told in the post-game press conference that she and her teammates were constantly abused racially and were the targets of verbal attacks from the visiting Casademont Zaragoza fans.
According to Spanish journalist Marc Mundet, FIBA has opened up an investigation into the matter. It will be handled by an independent body, Mundet notes, and the date of when the case will be resolved is currently not clear.
"At this game, there were fans that were being very disrespectful and disgusting almost because they were throwing racist comments at me and my teammates. And that just cannot happen," Burke said on March 3rd. "It's ridiculous at this point that no matter where we go, there's always sh-t like that happening."
"That can't happen just because your team lost. Like, you can't throw racist comments at the other team. That's just disrespectful. That's disgusting. You guys should evaluate your fans because that's not it," the player addressed Zaragoza. "That's not how you go all the way. So, that's all I'm going to say."
Villeneuve ended up advancing past Zaragoza to the semifinal round. They will compete against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. The first game of the series starts on March 15th.
