The NBA and Sony Sports have signed a multiyear agreement with Hawk-Eye Innovations to bring the world-renowned technology to the highest level of basketball. The system's optical tracking technology is able to capture player and ball movement in real-time in three dimensions.
Best known from tennis, the Hawk-Eye will replace the current 'center of mass' tracking system, Kirk Goldsberry from ESPN notes. Sportradar, the NBA's exclusive data partner, will work on providing the necessary stats, data sets, and other metrics to compliment the new technology.
Hawk-Eye was first tried in the NBA Summer League back in 2021 when 14 cameras were installed in the venue in Las Vegas. A year later, Sony acquired Beyond Sports, an AI-based data analysis and visualization company that utilizes the technology in bringing better fan engagement to professional sports.
The league announced that the widespread implementation of the Hawk-Eye technology will begin in the 2023-24 NBA season.
