Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has captured public attention with his outstanding performances recently. European basketball fans might witness him playing in the 2023 FIBA World Cup due to his family relations.

Reaves has been averaging 17.7 points, 3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in the month of March so far. According to German sports news outlet SPOX, the guard obtained a German passport last year and could be the naturalized player on the German national team's squad, a spot that was previously taken by Nick Weiler-Babb.

"I'm very interested. I've already talked to Dennis Schroder about it. A year ago, I had a lengthy conversation with the national team's coach Gordon Herbert. I really feel like it," Reaves told Bild in February.

Reaves' grandmother is from Germany, which allowed him to become a German citizen. His brother Spencer, who also holds German citizenship, currently plays for Brose Bamberg in Germany.

Reaves hasn't been registered as a German national in the FIBA system yet, which would currently not allow him to play for Germany. With 5 months remaining until the competition, chances are that the procedure would be completed if there was mutual interest from both sides.

The German national team came in third place in last year's EuroBasket, defeating Poland, who sensationally eliminated Luka Doncic's Slovenia, in the third-place game.

Originally undrafted from Wichita State, Reaves has been averaging 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.9 assists for the Lakers this season.
