"Just being in the backyard with my dad, just playing basketball, that's what kind of made me fall in love with the sport," Andrej said. "Ever since then, I've been just working as much as I can, and that's led me to this point. I'm super grateful for my dad's help and all the people that have led me along this journey."
If he had to play against his famous dad, Andrej is sure he'd win the matchup, at least until a three-point shootout is not involved.
"Now, I would win, he can't move like he used to," the prospect laughed.
"He can still shoot it. The key is to not give him a warm-up shot. If he doesn't get a warm-up shot, I'm good. If he has the ball first, it's the same result," Andrej explained. "What's more competitive is the shooting contest, that's where it gets tricky. He can get hot and you might have to go perfect the next round to beat him. There are some wins and losses in that column."
Andrej holds both Serbian and Greek passports. Due to his father's background, he's eligible to represent Serbia internationally, while due to his mother's background, he's suitable to represent Greece.
Asked whether he watches any kind of European basketball, Andrej said that he follows the EuroLeague.
"My dad is always sharing about his journey growing up and playing in Europe. Because of the time difference, I haven't watched full games but I have been following how some of the EuroLeague play. Olympiacos is doing great in Greece right now. I'm just happy that the Greek and Serbian teams are doing well in the EuroLeague, and I'm just happy to represent those two countries right here," the player said.
Andrej has been playing in the Jesuit High School in the Sacramento area. He had the pleasure to watch another son of a basketball legend blossom in front of him - Domantas Sabonis.
The son of Arvydas Sabonis, Domantas has led the Sacramento Kings to the first playoff appearance since 2006.
"A lot of these players' kids get to be in different environments than most, being around locker rooms and other NBA players," Andrej said about being a son of a professional basketball player in the NBA."
"The biggest thing is getting passed down the experience and stories that their dads have from playing in those days, just carrying them along with them to what they've been able to accomplish like Sabonis, carrying his dad's stories with him and using his dad's experience with him to the NBA."
With the Kings making the postseason, it will be the first time they'll appear in the playoffs since the days when Peja Stojakovic represented the team.
"My dad and I are super happy for them this year. A lot of people didn't expect them to be this good this year so soon with the trade they had last year with Sabonis but they've done a great job. Coach Mike Brown has done a really good job with those guys. I've been watching a lot of their games this year, and it's been fun being a part of the Kings family in Sacramento," Andrej concluded.
