Credit: FIBA Credit FIBABandirma's Banvit used to play in the top European basketball tournaments but went bankrupt in 2020 and closed all operations. Three years later, the club returns to basketball.
Per Turkish sports outlet BasketFaul, the organization's former chairman Ozkan Kilic announced the comeback.
"[We'll return] with a person who loves basketball and sports very much, who's very strong, but whose name we will announce at the beginning of May," Kilic said about the team's new coach.
The new Bandirma's club will not have a league preference and will accept participation in both the top Turkish league (BSL) and the second division (TBL).
"There will definitely be young people from Bandirma, but we will scan Anatolia [peninsula] and gather talents as we did before," the operative said. "At the end of all this, we will both establish a very strong infrastructure and have our team competing in Europe like Banvit [used to]."
Before going bankrupt, Banvit reached the EuroCup semifinal stage in 2015, won the Turkish Cup in 2017, and became the Basketball Champions League runner-up in the 2016-17 season.
