A dismal 2022-23 campaign for Panathinaikos Athens has just gotten worse. Following the Greens' premature elimination from the EuroLeague playoffs and the loss to ALBA Berlin at OAKA that might push them further down in the standings, the team coached by Christos Serelis has reached another negative milestone.

Panathinaikos' loss to Peristeri on Sunday afternoon didn't change much regarding the Greens' position in the Greek league standings, since the first place had long been reserved by Olympiacos Piraeus. PAO were going to finish second regardless of whether they'd win or lose their game against Vassilis Spanoulis' team.

Still, their 89-96 downfall was Panathinaikos' sixth overall loss in the 2022-23 Greek league regular season, the worst tally since 1996-97. Back then, PAO (the EuroLeague reigning champs at the time) finished the regular season with 18 wins and 8 losses, good enough for third place in the standings behind Olympiacos and AEK Athens who both had a 21-5 record.

Since that season, the Greens had never had more than five defeats.

But this season, PAO dropped their premiere against Aris in Thessaloniki, before losing to Olympiacos in Piraeus and at OAKA, PAOK in Thessaloniki, AEK in Ano Liossia and Peristeri. Overall, five of those defeats came in road games, while four of them transpired over the course of seven weeks with Christos Serelis coaching the squad.

Overall, Panathinaikos finished the regular season with a 16-6 record (and 2-4 in their last six contests. They will face seventh-placed Kolossos Rhodes in the first round of the playoffs in a best-of-three series.

On the other hand, Peristeri neared their season scoring-high against PAO, and will go up against AEK in the first round.

Marcus Denmon finished the game with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, with Ian Hummer adding 17 and Sylvain Francisco another 15.

Paris Lee scored 30 points on 4/7 3-point shooting, while Dwayne Bacon had 15 and Dimitris Agravanis 14.
