Crvena Zvezda's president said the club would do everything to keep Facundo Campazzo in Belgrade, revealing why some of the players from the previous season left the team.
"We will do everything to keep Campazzo and some other players, including the local ones," Covic told Prva TV. "We said that we would try to reach the Top 8. We behave realistically and don't live in a fantasy world."
"We behave according to our capabilities. We won the triple crown last season and ended the season by being indebted to the players and coaches. When you build a team, you have to do it earlier, we had to pay some of our obligations, but that does not diminish our gratitude for the help of the state," Covic continued.
According to Covic, Crvena Zvezda couldn't retain some of the players from the 2021-22 campaign due to a lack of funds.
"If we had the funds, Nikola Kalinic, Dejan Davidovac, Austin Hollins, Nate Walters, maybe Dejan Radonjic, who obviously made a mistake by going to Panathinaikos, would have stayed," Covic explained.
The 64-year-old also congratulated the eternal rival, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, for reaching the EuroLeague playoffs.
"I really and sincerely congratulate Partizan on reaching the Top 8," said Covic. "I believe they can take a step further. Zvezda will play to the maximum against Fenerbahce, we invite the fans to be with us at the Euroleague, ABA, and KLS matches."
In their last EuroLeague game this season, Crvena Zvezda will host Fenerbahce on Thursday at 19:00 CET.
