ESPN's Olgun Uluc recently released the total spend of every NBL team for the 2022-23 season, revealing some interesting insights into how the squads are managing their finances.

According to Uluc, the Adelaide 36ers spent the most with $2.92 million, followed closely by the South East Melbourne Phoenix with $2.85 million.

On the other hand, the Cairns Taipans, who finished third on the ladder and made it to the semi-finals, had the lowest spending at $1.65 million.

The three NBL teams that spent the most missed the playoffs, while the three teams that spent the least made it into the Top 4.

"The total spend is calculated after payments like certain bonuses and agent fees are paid. The figures are an indication of the total cash spent by each team, before rules and provisions -- the marquee and Special Restricted Player rules, for example -- reduce the number certain salaries are worth to determine the cap hit.

The actual cash spend of each team is higher than these figures distributed to teams, due to the fluctuation of the AUD-to-USD exchange rate. A majority of restricted players receive their respective salaries in USD, and a fixed exchange rate is used to calculate the cap hit in AUD; the actual current exchange rate is higher than what the NBL uses to make its calculations."

The salary cap for the 2022-23 season was set at $1,703,239.36.

NBL Total Spend

Adelaide 36ers: $2.92 million. South East Melbourne Phoenix: $2.85 million. Perth Wildcats: $2.64 million. Sydney Kings: $2.40 million. Melbourne United: $2.39 million. Brisbane Bullets: $2.35 million. Illawarra Hawks: $2.26 million. Tasmania JackJumpers: $2.05 million. New Zealand Breakers: $1.80 million. Cairns Taipans: $1.65 million.

League average: $2.33 million.

The second-least spenders Breakers took the eventual champions, the Kings, to a decider in their best-of-five Championship Series.
