Credit: FIBA Credit FIBAThe FIBA Central Board meeting took place over two days in the Philippines capital of Manila, one of the co-hosts for this year's FIBA Basketball World Cup. The meeting also coincided with the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Draw, which was held at the Araneta Coliseum.
Highlighting the meeting were the decisions of the Central Board to award the hosting rights of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 to the German Basketball Federation and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 to the Qatar Basketball Federation.
The Central Board has confirmed that the games of Window 1 and Window 2 of the FIBA Continental Cups 2025 Qualifiers will be, as was the case also after the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, merged and played in February 2024.
While the numbers of qualification games remain the same and the February Window will be longer, the details for a possible agreement between the EuroLeague and FIBA can be arranged much easier.
So far, there's no agreement between FIBA and the EuroLeague in place, nor any indication that the EuroLeague schedule will accommodate the qualifiers. However, this decision by FIBA can be seen as a first step in that direction.
