Brooks' first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers was considered to be a breaking point.
During the Grizzlies' six-game series loss, Brooks made derogatory comments about LeBron James, who is considered the Lakers' best player and has won four NBA championships. Brooks called James "old" and "tired" and suggested that he was not as good as he used to be.
In Game 3, Brooks punched James in the groin area, which led to his ejection. In Game 4, he failed to defend James on a game-tying basket and then allowed James to score a crucial basket in overtime, leading to the Grizzlies' loss. Additionally, Brooks refused to speak to the media after three of the losses, resulting in a $25,000 fine by the NBA.
The 27-year-old Canadian has represented Memphis since 2017.
He averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists over 73 regular-season games in 2022-23.
