After retiring from coaching, Mike Krzyzewski has spent the last year without a job in the field of basketball. The status quo is about to change.

Coach K, as he's widely known, has been appointed as the Special Adviser to Basketball Operations in the NBA, the league announced. Krzyzewski will begin his role by attending a meeting of NBA general managers next week.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to deepen my connection to the NBA and participate in conversations about further strengthening the league and the game," Krzyzewski told. "Even in my retirement from coaching, my passion for the sport has never been higher. This role will enable me to stay engaged with basketball at the highest level."

"We are honored to have Coach K join the NBA family and share his vast experience and expertise with the league and our teams," NBA President of League Operations Byron Spruell said. "As a preeminent coach and renowned leader who cares deeply about the game of basketball, he is uniquely suited to drive discussions and offer insights about the present and future of the NBA."

Krzyzewski won a record 1,202 games and five NCAA titles in his 47-year career. With Coach K, Duke advanced to 12 Final Fours in four different decades. They won five national championships in three different decades.

Krzyzewski -- who also led USA Basketball to three Olympic Gold Medals in 2008, 2012, and 2016 -- is generally regarded as the best men's college basketball coach of all time, even above John Wooden and his 10 national championships.
