Even though Tavares' contract was still valid for the 2023-24 season, the player strived to renew his deal with the franchise.
However, Real Madrid didn't feel the same way and the negotiations between the two sides had stalled. A major contributor to it was an internal Real Madrid policy that no player should receive more than €3.5 million gross income per year.
Tavares' salary was the maximum the club had internally decided to pay, which amounts to around €2 million net for a season.
Nevertheless, Real Madrid are willing to make an exception, Ramon Palomar from Diario Sport reports.
After averaging 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks for 16.2 PIR during the regular season, the Cabo Verdean upped his production and was unstoppable in the quarterfinal series against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade andaveraged 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks for a whopping 26.8 PIR.
Tavares registered dominant performances in both the EuroLeague semifinal and the final. First, he scored game-high 20 points, grabbed game-high 15 rebounds, drew 9 fouls, and registered a whopping 39 PIR in the semifinal. Then, he recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for 20 PIR in the final. He was later named the Final Four MVP.
Tavares is already the highest-paid Real Madrid player and 9th highest-paid athlete in the EuroLeague. A salary increase would place Tavares in the league's Top 5.
Earlier in the season, Tavares was also named the EuroLeague Best Defender.
