He will be taking over from the former president and general manager, Bob Myers, who stepped down from his position on May 30.
Warriors owner Joe Lacob expressed confidence in Dunleavy, stating that he believes Dunleavy is the ideal candidate to lead their basketball operations department. Lacob praised Dunleavy's extensive basketball knowledge, which he gained from his family background, his 15-year NBA playing career, and his five seasons working under Bob Myers in the front office.
Prior to his promotion, Dunleavy served as a pro scout for the Warriors in the 2018-19 season before being promoted to assistant GM. It is worth noting that Dunleavy comes from a basketball family, as his father, Mike Dunleavy Sr., had a long and successful career as an NBA player, coach, and executive.
During the 2022-23 regular season, the Warriors achieved a 44-38 record. However, their journey came to an end in the Western Conference semifinals when they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers.
