Antetokounmpo averaged 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. The PBWA notes that he "consistently fostered an atmosphere of mutual respect and openness with reporters who cover the NBA".
A total of five finalists were selected for the award. Besides Giannis, DeMar DeRozan, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and Donovan Mitchell were selected to the final five. More than 200 PBWA members determined the final outcome with a vote.
The award was not issued during the last two seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic that obstructed the normal procedures regarding basketball journalism in the league. Damian Lillard (2017 and 2020) and Shane Battier (2007 and 2013) are the only players to win the award more than once.
