Two of the longest-standing sports teams in the District of Columbia, the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals, could be undergoing a significant change as they explore the possibility of moving from Washington D.C. and Maryland.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the group that owns these teams, has engaged in initial discussions with government officials regarding a potential relocation to Northern Virginia, as reported by The Washington Post.

These talks are described as preliminary and exploratory, with Monumental also reaching out to city officials to discuss potential funding for arena upgrades.

Since the 1998 season, both the Wizards and Capitals have been based at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington D.C.'s Chinatown area, after previously playing at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland.

The Washington Post suggests that Northern Virginia's recent establishment as the new home for Amazon's second headquarters may have influenced the teams' considerations.

No NBA team has permanently moved to a different state or territory since the Nets relocated from New Jersey to Brooklyn in 2013.
