One notable aspect he touched upon was his strong desire to have Vasilije Micic on his team.
Despite Laso's initiative, Real Madrid were unable to secure the Serbian star's talents, and Laso reveals the behind-the-scenes account of their pursuit of Micic.
"After winning the EuroLeague for the second time in four seasons in 2018, we had to reorganize and find new weapons following Luka Doncic's departure to the NBA. Building a team requires a clear vision of the future, as it is immensely challenging to find key players," Laso shared in his book.
"While we welcomed Klemen Prepelic and Gabriel Deck that summer, we missed out on a significant signing that could have changed everything. That player was Vasilije Micic."
Los Blancos claimed the EuroLeague title during the 2017-18 season in Belgrade. However, this triumph did not deter Laso from pursuing his intention to acquire Micic as the replacement for Doncic. At the time, Micic transitioned from Zalgiris Kaunas to Anadolu Efes Istanbul instead of joining Madrid.
"Even before we became EuroLeague champions in Belgrade, we were convinced that Micic, then 24 years old, was the ideal replacement for Doncic. I had several conversations with him during the summer of 2018 and also the following year. I made attempts, but during one of those discussions, he gave me forceful arguments," Laso explained.
Furthermore, the newly appointed FC Bayern Munich head coach named the player he considers the best he has ever coached in Europe.
"Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of coaching many exceptional players in Europe. However, if I had to choose the absolute best, I would pick Rudy Fernandez," Laso pointed out. "Injuries aside, I firmly believe he would have enjoyed an excellent NBA career comparable to that of Manu Ginobili, for instance."
