Dinos Mitoglou's ordeal for using an illegal substance is over, since the Court of Arbitration for Sport has reduced the athlete's sentence to half. Hence, he's set to return to practices by the end of July and might play in the World Cup with Greece.

In March 2022, Dinos Mitoglouwas issueda 32-month ban from playing basketball for anti-doping violations. The player's camp decided to appeal the decision, bypassing the FIBA Appeals Court that had imposed the initial ban, and headed straight to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

According to Giorgos Zakkas from SDNA, the Court has cleared the Greek power forward, reducing his sentence to 16 months. This means that Mitoglou will be available to return to basketball activities from July 28.

Mitoglou convinced the court of his innocence, cooperated with the authorities and the judges understood that he had been a victim of a female doctor who was said to have promised treatments that helped treat various things, from repairing injuries or boosting athletic performance to increasing libido or fighting aging.

This development also means that Mitoglou, 27, might be at the disposal of the Greek national team for the World Cup, whose group stage will see Greece play in the Philippines.

At the same time, of course, the player is back on the market at a time when both Panathinaikos and Olympiacos are looking for a player in the power-forward position.

In a social media post, Mitoglou informed about his case and revealed the date on which he can play again. The last time he stepped on a basketball court was on February 11, 2022, and almost twenty days later (on March 4, 2022) it was known that he had been punished for using methandienone, one of the heaviest on the WADA-banned substances list.

"The CAS today reversed the first-instance decision of the FIBA Disciplinary Committee concerning Dinos Mitoglou and reduced his sentence to 16 months. In the practical part, Dinos is free to compete from 28 July, 2023," the player posted.
