Barca, who had submitted a qualified offer to the ACB, due to the fact that the player was subject to the 'tanteo' rule, had to wait until midnight CET to find out if Real Madrid, the club that had its rights in the Liga Endesa, had matched the offer.

The Catalan club presented a formal offer on July 7, but Madrid upheld the right of first refusal over the player until July 12 at 11:59 p.m., which they didn't exercise.

Guillermo Gustavo 'Willy' Hernangmoez is a player formed in the lower categories of Real Madrid, a club he left in the 2016-17 season when his NBA adventure began. Drafted in 2015 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the United States, he has played for the New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, and New Orleans Pelicans.

Hernagomez spent seven seasons in the NBA. He has played a total of 344 games, averaging 7.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. His best seasons were his first in New York (72 games played; 18.4 minutes; 8.2 points and 7 rebounds) and the second in New Orleans (50 games played; 16.8 minutes; 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds).

In last year's EuroBasket, where Spain was crowned champions, Willy was voted MVP of the tournament, with 9 games played (22.4 minutes; 17.2 points; 6.9 rebounds).
