"Hello, fans in China. This is Li Kaier. I'm so happy to announce that I would be representing China in the World Cup. I'm really proud and honored to wear the Team China jersey," Anderson, who also has a Chinese name Li Kaier, announced on his Weibo account.
According to Chinese media, the cost of naturalizing Anderson is much less than that for the footballers -- about $1 million, which will be covered by sponsors. After he was given No. 32 of the Chinese NT, Nike announced an endorsement deal with Anderson.
Anderson's maternal grandmother was born to a Chinese father and Jamaican mother, making him one-eight Chinese.
In a family discovery, Anderson's relatives in China were tracked down in 2018, all thanks to his mother's determination to explore their roots. Their ancestral ties were found to be from Xinmu New Village in Longgang, Shenzhen.
Last season, Anderson averaged 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game in 69 appearances for the T-Wolves.
