The news has shaken the team and its supporters as police say they found a loaded gun in Coffey's car during a routine traffic stop.
According to reports from TMZ Sports, officers pulled over the vehicle in which Coffey was a passenger around 2:30 AM in Hollywood, after they allegedly saw him exceeding the speed limit. Approaching the car, the police officers claimed to have detected an odor of marijuana, which led to a search of the vehicle and the subsequent discovery of the weapon.
Amir Coffey allegedly admitted that the gun was his, resulting in his arrest for misdemeanor possession of a firearm. On the other hand, another person who was on the scene was cited for possession of marijuana.The player is expected to appear in court next month.
The 2.01-meter player stepped into the NBA at the age of 22, and has been sweating the Clippers team's jersey for four seasons. Coffey averaged 3.4 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists while playing in 50 games with his team last season.
The 26-year-old has been a part of the Clippers organization since 2019, amassing a total of 181 games played for the team over the past four seasons. During his career in Los Angeles, Coffey has averaged 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.
