Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis will not appear for the Latvian national team in the upcoming FIBA World Cup 2023 after announcing Tuesday that a case of plantar fasciitis in his right foot will force him to miss the event.

Porzingis made this decision after thoughtful discussions with both the Celtics organization and the coaching and medical teams of the Latvian squad.

The Celtics promptly issued an official statement, revealing that Porzingis will undergo a four-to-six-week rehabilitation program and is expected to be cleared for the start of training camp.

This setback adds to the challenges Porzingis has faced due to injuries throughout his career.

The 28-year-old center hasn't played more than 66 games in a single season since his rookie year in 2015-16. He had to sit out the entire 2018-19 campaign due to a torn ACL, played 43 games in the 2020-21 season, and featured in 51 games in 2021-22.

Porzingis posted some of the best numbers of his career last season with the Washington Wizards, averaging 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 blocks over 65 appearances while shooting 49.8% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point range.
