James naturally became the focal point of their discussion. At first, Obradovic dismissed attempts to stir trouble, emphasizing their respective personalities and how they've managed to navigate challenges.
"People know my character, as well as his. Despite any imperfections, we found a way to work together and ultimately prospered," Obradovic confidently stated.
"It should be known that I am someone who managed to find an adequate way to use Mike, with all his 'bugs,'" he added.
Addressing any lingering uncertainties, the Serbian specialist made it obvious that Mike James is here to stay.
"He is staying, of course," Obradovic pointed out. "He has a contract. That was not the topic at all. If he had tried to leave, he would probably have been asked for a large compensation. I would say that is not an option."
Obradovic reiterated what Mike James himself recently said on the URBONUS podcast. The EuroLeague star confirmed he's expected to stay in AS Monaco for the 2023-24 season: "I didn't agree with nobody. ... I think for this season, I'm here. Free agency is the next summer, and we'll see what happens."
With James remaining on board, Monaco's landscape has undoubtedly undergone a significant transformation this summer. Obradovic offered insights into their strengthened roster.
"When you look at it from a distance, it can be said that we have reinforced. Last year's core of the team remained; we also signed Tarpey, Jaiteh, and Cornelie -- French players who we missed in some part of last season. On paper, we are more competitive with EuroLeague clubs, but many things need to be solved daily."
Which ones?
"For example, last year, we needed three balls. Now, we need even more," Obradovic said with a smile.
AS Monaco arguably made the biggest EuroLeague acquisition this offseason by adding four-time NBA All-Star Kemba Walker. What to expect from him?
"Walker's arrival certainly carries a significant impact, infusing a fresh dimension into our team," Obradovic stated. "Yet, we must act cautiously, assessing the state of his physical well-being and his capacity to fulfill the high expectations.
"His past struggles with knee issues, a pivotal factor in his NBA departure, highlight the need for careful evaluation. We need to take care of that now, give it attention and see where we are. If we look at everything except the paper, everything is still a big unknown."
Roca Team's backcourt boasts an impressive quartet of James, Walker, Jordan Lloyd, and Elie Okobo -- a lineup that might seem formidable on paper. Obradovic, however, cautioned against banking solely on star power.
"It is not a guarantee of success," he underlined. "We need cohesion in the team, a balance between players who are more or less creative in the team, who do some other things better. It is always the best option to build a team.
"Here, we have four creative guys, all of whom need the ball in their hands and need attention, minutes, and shots. As much as you think it looks phenomenal on paper, on the other hand, it's a headache."
