Medical professionals treating Bronny James, the eldest son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, have determined that his sudden cardiac arrest in July was likely caused by a congenital heart defect.

The James family issued a statement revealing the findings after a thorough assessment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by Dr. Merije Chukumerije, as well as subsequent evaluations at Mayo Clinic by Dr. Michael J. Ackerman and Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center by Dr. Matthew W. Martinez.

"The probable cause of Mr. James' sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) has been identified. It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated," the family said in a statement obtained by CBS Sports.

The family's statement also conveyed their confidence in Bronny's complete recovery.

"We are very confident in Bronny's full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future," the James family said. "We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family's request for privacy."

Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest during a practice session at USC campus in July. He was promptly taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit and later transferred to stable condition before his discharge home. Throughout his recovery, he has remained in good spirits.

As he continues to recover, Bronny has been absent from the team's activities in preparation for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
