The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 marathon continued, as 16 teams were gearing up for their Match Day 2 games on Monday.

It was a day of firsts for two teams. Both South Sudan and Cabo Verde captured their first-ever wins at the FIBA World Cup. While Luol Deng's South Sudan easily defeated Kyle Anderson's China, Edy Tavares' Cabo Verde - the smallest nation to ever participate in the tournament - overcame a 10+ point deficit and ended up victorious.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who garnered social media attention for his Kobe Bryant-like moves in the first World Cup game, made a clutch four-point play to send the game to overtime, but it was not enough to defeat New Zealand.

Controversy followed in the game between Cote d'Ivoire and Iran when a foul with just six seconds left in the game largely determined the outcome. With Iran leading by one, their head coach received a technical foul. Cote d'Ivoire converted all three free throws, and Iran wasn't able to overcome it.

Later on, Luka Doncic's Slovenia went head-to-head against Georgia. The Mavericks superstar recorded a 34-point double-double en route to a comfortable win.

Serbia's win against Puerto Rico left a bitter aftertaste for the country's fans, as Aleksa Avramovic was injured and couldn't play in the second half.

The star-studded Team USA got their second victory against Greece. Even though the underdogs fought in the first quarter, Steve Kerr's squad dominated in the remaining periods en route to a 28-point victory.

To end the day, Spain took care of Brazil, capturing first place in Group G.
