Gilas Pilipinas seemed to have lost all hope to directly qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. However, there is a crazy scenario that would allow them to do just that.

Philippines / Schedule

Philippines PhilippinesAngola Angola70-80Philippines PhilippinesItaly Italy83-90South Sudan South SudanPhilippines Philippines87-68Philippines PhilippinesChina ChinaSat12:00

The scenario is based on the FIBA ranking system that puts group winners in 17th-20th places, second-placed teams in 21st-24th places, third-placed teams in 25th-28th places, and the fourth-placed teams in 29th-32nd places.

With all six Asian teams playing in the classification stage, the best-placed squad will qualify for the Paris Olympics directly.

As such, Gilas Pilipinas needs to place second in Group M to start the additions and subtractions that will determine the best team from Asia in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Tons of details do not depend on Gilas Pilipinas themselves.

First, South Sudan needs to win against Angola. Then, Gilas must win by at least 14 points against China to establish a favorable head-to-head point difference between them, Angola, and China.

If both outcomes happen, Gilas Pilipinas will finish the group in second place.

Jordan is the only team from Asia in Group N. Since they have a much more unfavorable total point differential than Gilas (-93 compared to -42), they would not be placed higher than Gilas even if they won. Unless, of course, they dismantle Mexico by around 70 points.

Japan is in the driver's seat on the road to the 2024 Paris Olympics. As such, a vital and arguably the most difficult part of the entire scenario comes exactly here in Group O.

For Gilas Pilipinas to have a shot, Finland has to first win against Venezuela. Then, Japan has to lose by at least 17 points to Cabo Verde so that they remain third in the group.

Japan cannot be placed second in their respective group since they have two more wins than Gilas before the last game. Japan's loss by 17+ is a must for Gilas.

Finally, Lebanon currently has one win in the pocket. Once again, they cannot have more wins than Gilas if they finish in the same place in their respective group. As such, Lebanon has to lose the last game to Iran.

Since both Lebanon and Iran are in a very similar situation to Jordan, a favorable point differential in the 2023 FIBA World Cup would push Gilas Pilipinas ahead.

To wrap things up:
