Yuta Watanabe and Japan have a special reason to celebrate. Following their victory in Saturday's game against Cape Verde, Japan has secured a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics as the best Asian team in the FIBA World Cup 2023.

This marks the eighth time Japan will participate in the Olympic Games, and it's also Yuta Watanabe's second consecutive Olympic appearance after his participation in the Tokyo basketball tournament.

In Japan, basketball, as one of the most popular sports in the country, shows a strong presence in various ways.

A smash-hit anime movie Slam Dunk generated over $100 million domestically and basketball betting that many Japanese bookmakers provide opportunities to give a few examples. Watanabe's performance in the tournament created great excitement across the country.

Interestingly, Phoenix Suns sharpshooter had declared before the FIBA World Cup 2023 that he would step away from wearing the Japan jersey if the team failed to qualify for next year's Olympics.

"I have played for the Japanese national team for almost 13 years. I have never left any results during this period of representing the country. If I can't advance to next year's Paris Olympics with this squad this time, I think this World Cup will be the last time I will wear the national team jersey," Watanabe said at that time, via UDN.

However, after topping Group O with three wins, Watanabe has changed his tune.

"I was really worried about such a big mouth," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Everyone helped me. I will continue as a representative until I die. Thank you for your continued support!"

Watanabe averaged 14.8 points and 6.2 rebounds over five FIBA World Cup games.
