Credit: FIBA Credit FIBAThe final phase of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 is upon us, kicking off with two thrilling quarterfinal matchups scheduled for Tuesday.
The day started with a European classic, as two continental powerhouses -- Bendzius-less Lithuania and Serbia -- faced each other for a big quarter-final battle in Manila. However, despite expectations of a close game, Lithuania was no match for Serbia and Bogdan Bogdanovic, losing the must-win contest by a 19-point margin.
It was just the second time in the FIBA World Cup history when Lithuania and Serbia have crossed paths. In the first game in 2010, Linas Kleiza posted a remarkable 33-point performance, which propelled Lithuania to a 99-88 victory in the Third Place Game held in Istanbul.
Following Serbia's win, the spotlight shifted to the game between Italy and Team USA at 14:40 CET. Italy was determined to follow in Lithuania's footsteps and defy the odds by handing a defeat to the star-studded American squad.
Team USA had other thoughts, though. The favorites dominated the game from the very first minutes and took an easy 37-point win en route to the semifinals.
Before the match, a significant portion of attention was focused on Paolo Banchero, whose father has Italian heritage and who had previously told he'd play for the Italian national team.
The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year ultimately chose to represent Team USA. Now he's heading to the penultimate round of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
