Credit: FIBA Credit FIBAThe final FIBA World Cup 2023 phase continued, as Wednesday offered two quarterfinal matchups.
To start the day off, Latvia looked to shock the world once again in a meeting against Germany.
The underdogs kept the game close throughout the entire 40 minutes. After a successful defensive possession, Latvia, down by two, had a chance to win. However, Davis Bertans' three-pointer was no good, and Germany narrowly escaped.
Dennis Schroder had an awful game. The guard made just 4 shots in 26 attempts, had 4 turnovers, and 4 fouls en route to an abysmal -9 efficiency score.
Franz Wagner, however, came back after missing four games due to an ankle injury. The forward returned with a vengeance, scoring a team-leading 16 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.
In the second game of the day, Luka Doncic's Slovenia went up against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander-led Canada.
Even though the first half was close, the Canadians improved their game in the second half and got a relatively easy win.
The match was marred by numerous episodes when both Luka Doncic and the Slovenian team complained about referee decisions. Doncic even showed the money sign toward the FIBA representatives in the stands, implying that the officials had been bribed.
After not getting a call in the fourth quarter, Doncic received his second technical foul and was ejected. Dillon Brooks, who was defending Doncic most of the time, got an unsportsmanlike foul in the first quarter, later received a technical in the fourth, and got ejected from the game as well.
With the win, Canada advanced to the semifinal stage in the FIBA World Cup for the first time ever.
