Credit: FIBA Credit FIBAThe final and most important day of the 2023 FIBA World Cup came with two games deciding the exact final standings of the tournament.
On the first game of the day, Team USA squared off against Canada. In a high-scoring game of two NBA-based teams, Canada pulled ahead early.
Despite the deficit, Team USA upped their defensive effort in the fourth quarter and quickly erased a 10-point deficit to even the game. With the score tied at 107, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hit a tough jumper, Dillon Brooks made two free throws, and the US was left with a four-point deficit and 20 seconds remaining to play.
In a chaotic offensive possession, Mikal Bridges managed to force a foul. Shooting to free throws with just four seconds left, he missed the second shot after making the first one. However, Canada didn't get the rebound. Then, Bridges himself grabbed the ball and hit a fadeaway three-pointer from the corner to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Canada was the better team in the overtime, though. Team USA lacked rebounding and defensive stops, while Canada earned their first-ever medal in their World Cup history.
Team USA, meanwhile, lost their third game of the tournament, a feat last seen only in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
Dillon Brooks had a game of his life, scoring 39 points and making 6 three-pointers. Gilgeous-Alexander added 31 points, 6 rebounds, and 12 assists.
To finish the day and the competition, Germany and Serbia met in the final.
With a score tied at 49, Germany went on a 15-4 run in the third quarter and established a solid 11-point advantage (64-53). Germany maintained the lead and headed into the final quarter with a 12-point lead.
When it seemed like Serbia was lost, Aleksa Avramovic took over the game in the fourth quarter. First, he hit multiple layups and then forced an offensive foul. Then, he hit two late-second three-pointers and converted all three free throws after attempting another.
With 1:21 on the clock, the teams were separated by just three points (78-75). Isaac Bonga lost the ball, but Marko Guduric failed to make a wide-open triple from the corner to tie the game.
Dennis Schroder converted only one free throw, and Serbia had a chance with 48 seconds remaining. Down by four (75-79), Guduric made two free throws, and everything came down to the wire.
However, Dennis Schroder drove past Avramovic to make a driving layup with 21 seconds remaining. Guduric turned the ball over, Schroder made two free throws, and Serbia could not come back.
It was Germany's first-ever World Cup title. Meanwhile, Serbia lost their fifth consecutive FIBA tournament final.
Schroder was named the MVP of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Besides Schroder, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Anthony Edwards were named to the All-Tournament Team.
