Herbert guided Germany to bronze medals in the EuroBasket 2022, and now he and the rest of the team have become the champions in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
As the 64-year-old tactician recalled, everything started in September 2021
"2021 was when I got the job. I drove to Braunschweig, and I met Dennis in 2021, September," Herbert recalled. "We talked for about 3-4 hours, and that's where everything started."
"I felt his heart, commitment, and care for his country, national team, and teammates. To me, that's where everything started. 2021, September," Herbert added.
Herbert also reminded everyone about each and every player who was a part of this road of becoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 champions, adding that the beginning wasn't that bright.
"First, I'd like to give a shoutout to all the German players who helped us qualify for this tournament," Herbert said. "A lot of people don't remember that we lost the first qualification game to Estonia. Then, we went 10-2. We had Dennis, Isaac Bonga, and Johannes Voigtmann playing in June windows."
"Guys who didn't have contracts came and committed, setting an example for everyone else. This is the result. Like I told the players: a tremendous group of players. We were a team first, and then we had an individual talent," Herbert concluded.
