The news was broken by Jeff Boals, head coach of the Ohio University basketball team, a school Hunter attended before becoming a professional player.
The official reason for Hunter's death remains unclear.
Tim O'Shea, a former Ohio coach, shared on Facebook that Hunter collapsed at the end of a yoga class.
After becoming a three-time All-MAC First Team honoree from 2001 to 2003, Hunter went on to be drafted with the 56th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He spent two years in the league with the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic, averaging 3.3 points and 2.8 rebounds.
Following a stint in the NBA, Hunter went on to play in Europe for Panathinaikos Athens and Napoli Basket.
Former NBA guard TJ Ford was shocked by the news. "We just spoke last week. Losing a lot of my friends lately," he said on X, formerly Twitter.
