It doesn't make sense to sign right now," he underlined at Media Day. "I want to be a Milwaukee Buck for the rest of my career, as long as we are winning. The commitment from the team, for me, is there."
Entering the third season of a five-year, $228 million supermax extension in 2023-24, Giannis holds a player option after the 2024-25 season.
The Bucks currently have the option to extend an offer of three years and $173 million. However, ESPN's Bobby Marks highlights that the extension's actual new money value would only be $117 million. This is due to the replacement of his $51.9 million player option with a salary starting at $52.2 million in 2025-26.
There is a possibility of increasing the extension to $186 million if the salary cap experiences a 10% increase in both 2024-25 and 2025-26. The NBA reportedly sent a memo to teams in late June, projecting the cap increasing 4.4% in 2024-25.
Because Giannis is considered to have two years left on his contract (the player option does not count), the deadline for him to sign an extension is Oct. 23, the last day before the start of the regular season.
