According to BasketNews sources, the German basketball federation is unwilling to grant Herbert permission to sign a EuroLeague contract and work both in ASVEL and the German national team.
The current stance of the German basketball federation complicates Herbert's chances of returning to the EuroLeague after a 15-year absence, given his commitment to maintaining his role within the German national team.
A Canadian-Finnish head coach has recently achieved remarkable success with the German national team. Under his guidance, Germany secured a bronze medal at the 2022 EuroBasket and captured the World Cup in 2023. Next summer, he is set to lead the German team in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In line with the FIBA calendar, the 2023-24 season features only one FIBA window in February.
Currently, three head coaches hold both EuroLeague and national team coaching positions: Kazys Maksvytis (Lithuania, Zalgiris), Luca Banchi (Latvia, Virtus), and Ergin Ataman (Turkey, Panathinaikos).
In summer, this list also included Dimitris Itoudis (Greece, Fenerbahce) and Sergio Scariolo (Spain, Virtus).
Herbert's contract with the German national team runs until 2025.
