All of them are young men in their twenties and had come to Bologna from Belgrade, Nice and Vienna. As they were unable to find tickets, a few hours before the game, they decided to watch the match in a rented apartment not far from the PalaDozza arena.
The attack happened when they went to a nearby store to get food and drinks. They did not have any visible signs of the club on them. It's assumed that someone informed the hooligans about their presence.
After ten minutes in the shop, between 30 and 40 Roma hooligans awaited them on the street, and attacked them with clubs, belts, and even hammers. They were rescued by the local police who arrived at the scene.
After the game, Zvezda representatives found out about the incident, got involved, and offered all help to the injured fans, while the Italian police opened an investigation.
The Serbian side clarifies that "there was no organized departure of Red Star fans to Bologna, nor was there any 'fan conflict'."
"The four fans, who study abroad and were attacked on Friday, traveled to Bologna on their own initiative. The club is in contact with the families of the students, who were taken to the hospital as a precaution after the attack, from which they were immediately released and are feeling well."
Crvena Zvezda announced on Thursday that it had received a letter from the local police in Bologna informing them that visiting supporters would not be allowed to enter the PalaDozza. It was stated that even the fans with purchased tickets would not be able to attend the match.
The attack is thought to have come as retaliation for an incident that took place last February, when Zvezda fans attacked Roma supporters after the Serie A match between Roma and Empoli. Corriere della Sera reported that Serbian fans surrounded a vehicle with Roma ultras. As a result, two fans of the home club were injured, and Zvezda fans took away signs, scarves and other material before fleeing into the nearby streets.
