According to Front Office Sports, Amazon is looking to give the NBA the same treatment it gives to the National Football League (NFL), which has a day of streaming dedicated to it entitled Thursday Night Football (TNF).
While Amazon is interested in this prospect, the NBA is drawn to it for a number of reasons.
Amazon's ability to draw a younger audience especially intrigues the NBA. A deal is far from being complete, as the NBA is also in negotiations with ESPN and TNT, though this situation may not preclude an agreement with Amazon.
Irrespective of anything, the NBA has set a clear goal of boosting its media and rights gains for the future. An indicator of this is the league's expansion to Brazil and China, the first of which actually sees Amazon Prime take on the broadcasting duties.
Front Office Sports also reports that the NBA will seek $50-$75 billion for its next cycle of long-term media rights.
For comparison, Amazon agreedto pay $1 billion yearly for the TNF rights until 2033.
NBA's increased hunger for media revenue has created a volatile market where Amazon, TNT, and ESPN are not the only suitors.
According to Front Office Sports, Apple will also be making a move.
While no current deal is in place yet with any of the named candidates, Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, has a strong vision for increased NBA media presence, and the fallout of this situation will present itself soon.
