The late specialist was surrounded by family members at his home in Bloomington, Indiana, the announcement read.
Last April, Knight was admitted to a hospital with an "acute illness", and Indiana University were asking for prayers for their stricken coach, according to reports.
Knight, who turned 83 a few days ago, had battled health issues since his return to Bloomington but did appear at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall for a reunion of his former players when the Hoosiers played Purdue on Feb. 8, 2020.
The legendary former Indiana University coach and 1984 United States selector led the Hoosiers from 1971-through-2000, winning national titles in 1976, 1981 and 1987. He was the Division I men's basketball all-time wins leader at the time of his retirement and led the US team to gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, beating Spain in the final.
Knight was the head coach of the only undefeated team in college basketball history in 1975. Knight became among the winningest coaches in the sport, finishing his career with 902 victories in 42 seasons at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech.
He was nicknamed 'The General' and his temper was such that in 2000 it cost him his job at Indiana. He once hit a police officer in Puerto Rico, threw a chair across the court and was accused of wrapping his hands around a player’s neck.
