"Pangos is not the right man to make this team play in a certain way, and I didn't make the right adjustments trying to simplify the game, making him pass more through two big men like Nicolo Melli and Johannes Voigtmann. With a simpler game, we'd have fewer turnovers, something that cost us several losses.
"I admit that I made a mistake," he added. "Maybe I should have understood that, when Pangos went from being Cleveland Cavaliers backup guard to being out of the rotations in a few months.
The Italian coach's statements didn't go down well with Mike James, who reacted with an avalanche of tweets.
"Damn, he just threw Pangos in the ocean," he initially observed and further stressed that Messina should focus on himself and the way he constructed Milan's roster instead of pointing fingers.
The scoring guard of AS Monaco made clear that he doesn't think Messina's statements were in any way altered or mispresented, as the veteran coach said.
James recalled his own tenure at Milan (2018-19) and how it ended, even though he had a three-year deal in place. "I talked to him like 3-4 times that summer (2019) about the season then got an email randomly that I wasn't wanted from some dude I never met. Clearly not an adult," the 33-year-old player mentioned.
James also questioned the way Milan's roster has been constructed by Messina, emphasizing the large numbers of players who can play the power forward position and expressing doubts about the team's style of play.
However, he didn't stop there. James called Messina "a dinosaur," adding that he needs to regroup and look into the mirror and evolve.
"Winning a EuroLeague when Kyle Hines was in college doesn't show me you know how to win today," he observed.
He also pointed out that wouldn't be surprised if Milan started winning games, since their roster is good.
