The scuffle began when Thompson and McDaniels started pulling and shoving each other in transition. Wolves centerRudy Gobertmoved in to pull back Thompson, but was in turn grabbed by Green, who put the French big man in a headlock and violently dragged him away for seven seconds.
Thompson and McDaniels were both handed double technicals, while Green was hit with a flagrant 2 foul, all automatic ejections. At that point, the game was still scoreless.
As the sanctions for Green are to be announced, the NBA veteran recorded his 18th ejection, increasing his lead among active NBA players. After the game, crew chief Tyler Ford told a pool reporter Green was assessed a flagrant 2 because "he aggressively put Gobert in a headlock and refuses to let go. This is unnecessary and excessive conduct."
Gobert was not disciplined because he "was attempting to separate Thompson and McDaniels and was ruled to be a peacemaker."
In his postgame statements, Gobert told reporters that Green demonstrated a 'clown behavior' and claimed his opponent wanted to get ejected because Stephen Curry was not playing.
“Every time Steph doesn’t play, he doesn’t want to play without his guy Steph so he does anything he can to get ejected," Gobert said per The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski.
While league officials looked at Gobert's role in the scuffle as a peacemaker, Steve Kerr didn't look at it the same way.
"There's no way Klay Thompson should've been thrown out of the game," the Warriors coach said. "Guys on the back were telling me Rudy had his hands on Klay's neck, that's why Draymond went after him."
The Timberwolves won 104-101 to move to 2-0 in West Group C of the in-season tournament standings. The Warriors are 1-1.
