This agreement has been called "a public-private partnership" between the State of Virginia and Monumental Sports and Entertainment, stated Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia.
The district in question would includea new headquarters for Monumental, a Wizards practice facility, a performing arts venue, and an expanded esports facility in addition to the new arena, according to the press release.
Right now, the Washington Wizards are playing on Capital One Arena, which Leonsis called "theworst building deal in professional sports." Nevertheless, there are still plans to keep the WNBA team, the Washington Mystics, at that arena.
The Wizards' new arena is slated to open in 2028.
