The team is grappling with backcourt challenges and a need for a roster spot, prompting these talks.

Rubio, 33, has been on permitted leave in Spain since the summer, focusing on managing his mental health. There are now significant doubts about his future playing prospects, The Athletic writes.

Currently earning $6.1 million this season, Rubio's next year's contract is guaranteed at $4.25 million.

The Cavs and Rubio's representatives are exploring various options. A negotiated buyout of a substantial portion of the contract is on the table.

Alternatively, the team could opt to waive him and "stretch" the payments of his remaining salary over a more extended period. Another possibility is including his contract in a trade.

Rubio last played on April 23 in the playoff series against the New York Knicks. Last season, he averaged 5.2 points and 3.5 assists over 33 games.
