Luis Scola, the owner of Pallacanestro Varese, played a key role in bringing Nico Mannion back to Italy. A Baskonia legend, Scola reached out to the Spanish side to initiate the deal, and his privileged relationship with the front office helped in the process.
Scola also reached out privately to the family of the player, sources have told BasketNews to convince them that a return to Italy and specifically to Varese would be the best option for Mannion at this stage of his career.
Since he arrived in Spain this summer, Mannion has struggled to find a consistent role with the Basque side, and especially after the hiring of coach Dusko Ivanovic, his role inside the rotations has shrunk considerably.
Once he'll terminate his contract with Baskonia, Mannion is expected to sign a deal until the end of the season with Varese, sources have told BasketNews.
Another Italian team, Basketball Champions League side Dinamo Sassari, tried to lure Mannion, but in the end, the player preferred Varese's destination.
