In yet another dismal night for Detroit, the Pistons' 118-112 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday marked a grim milestone, setting a single-season record for consecutive defeats at 27 games lost in a row.
Pistons head coach Monty Williams struggled to find words after yet another defeat, expressing the harsh reality of their situation.
"You have to be real where we are. Nobody wants something like this attached to them," Williams said, whose team hasn't tasted victory since October 28. "The bottom line is it's my job, it's my responsibility. When you look at the record, coaches are graded on their records. That's the bottom line."
Acknowledging the weight of the losing streak, Williams emphasized its impact on both coaches and players.
"When you look at the records, you think of coaches, but I'm sure the players don't want that attached to the name of the jersey. It has been heavy for a while, it's just kind of the nature of this kind of losing streak," he continued. "It's not going to change because we're grading the level of it. We got to do what we got to do to change it.
"Is it heavy? Yeah. I would imagine for everybody it is," Williams went on to say. "Nobody wants this kind of thing attached to them. I was brought in here to change this thing, and it's probably the most on me than anybody. The players are playing their hearts out. I got to get them in a position where they don't feel tight or heavy. But it's where we are. That's the reality of the situation."
Detroit Pistons, an iconic franchise with NBA titles in 1989, 1990, and 2004, have now surpassed the 26-game losing streaks of the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2013-14 Sixers.
As the final moments ticked off on Tuesday night, fans at Little Caesars Arena voiced their frustration once again, chanting, "Sell the team!"
