On Sunday, the New York Knicks officially waived the 38-year-old big man Taj Gibson just three weeks after bringing him back.

The Knicks signed Gibson, a favorite of coach Tom Thibodeau, in response to the team's need for reinforcement following the loss of starting center Mitchell Robinson to a stress fracture in his left ankle on December 15.

Gibson appeared in 10 games off the bench, averaging 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds over 9.7 minutes, but hadn't appeared in the past three matches.

"Taj stepped up in a big way to help our team this season and has had an immeasurable impact on our organization both on and off the court throughout his time with the Knicks," team president Leon Rose said in a statement.

Gibson's connection with Thibodeau extends beyond his recent stint with the Knicks, having also played under him in Chicago and Minnesota.

During his tenure with the Knicks from 2019 to 2022, Gibson played a key role in the team's return to the postseason in 2021 after a seven-year absence.
