Credit: Vangelis Stolis Credit Vangelis StolisGoran Sasic, the executive director of theEuroLeague Head Coaches Board, has expressed concern over the recent instability within the organization concerning the dismissal of multiple head coaches.
He notes that the issues extend beyond just the members and emphasizes the need for a fair allocation of accountability for results. He proposes collaboration with the EuroLeague and ELPA to introduce trades for player exchanges starting from the next season.
"It remains for us to think about how to develop something for the benefit of the sport, as we thought four years ago that the bad practice of termination is solved by establishing the Arbitration Court for the settlement of EuroLeague disputes," Sasic told Meridian Sport.
"We conclude we need to distribute the responsibility for the results evenly, and we will work with the EuroLeague and ELPA to introduce a trade principle that could be applied from next season so that clubs can exchange players," he added.
The recent dismissal of Gianmarco Pozzecco drew the most attention from Sasic.
He finds the situation unpleasant not just because of the mid-season coaching change but also due to the public criticism from LDCL ASVEL Villeurbanne president Tony Parker.
"I witnessed very positive things before the contract termination in Zalgiris, where players stood behind their [now former] coach, Kazys Maksvytis," Sasic noted. "It's great to see such a positive mindset among the team. However, amidst these positive reflections, I must highlight the unexpected behavior of the former NBA champion, Tony Parker.
"His statements following the dismissal of coach Pozzecco not only impact the organization of ASVEL but also raise questions about his decision-making. This isn't the first instance of such behavior from Parker. He had previously made similar comments about the former coach, Zvezdan Mitrovic," the executive continued.
"While I typically withhold from discussing matters unrelated to our members, Pozzecco being an exception in this case, I feel forced to address this issue," he also added. "I often say that one mistake should be forgiven for everyone, but if it happens twice, I think it's becoming a pattern. This case raises many questions about ASVEL's direction in the EuroLeague. Who is the right coach for the club? Is it Tony Parker himself?
"Simultaneously, there are reports circulating about the sale of ASVEL's shares, posing more important issues. These matters should be addressed."
